The Universidade da Coruña was created by Law 11/1989 of July 20, 1989, on the Organization of the Galician University System. On February 4, 1992, the Constituent Senate approved the University Statutes, which were published in the DOG on September 17, 1992.

The University of A Coruña is territorially structured into campuses in A Coruña and Ferrol.

The University of A Coruña is a public institution whose main purpose is the generation, management and dissemination of culture and scientific, technological and professional knowledge through research and teaching.

The University of A Coruña conceives its essential purpose as a quality public service aimed at achieving higher levels of welfare for society as a whole through the pursuit of social, scientific and technological advances within a framework of generally accepted ethical values. Part of the mission of the University of A Coruña is the formation of an open, educated, critical, committed, democratic and supportive citizenship, capable of analyzing reality, diagnosing problems, formulating and implementing solutions based on knowledge and oriented to the common good.

The University of A Coruña explicitly states its commitment to the study and integral development of Galicia, particularly its social, cultural and linguistic identity, and will also promote its full integration into the European Higher Education Area and its projection in Latin America.

In order to provide the University with permanent social support, the Fundación Universidad de A Coruña, a private foundation of a charitable educational nature, was created.
